North Carolina's attorney general says domestic violence killed 131 people in the state last year, and he's urging victims to get court-ordered protection against their abusers.
Attorney General Roy Cooper said today the problem is being "swept under the rug." He said only eight people killed in 2008 had taken out protective orders, and only three were current when the victim died.
Mecklenburg County had the highest number of deaths at 14. But Cooper said he was surprised by the statistics in some smaller rural counties, where as many as five deaths were reported.
The statistics were collected under a 2007 state law that ordered all counties to report domestic violence deaths. The study provides the first comprehensive assessment of such deaths in North Carolina.

Exactly! These situations are swept under the rug. I'm glad someone else realizes that. My first question is....... Why do victims not seek protective orders? Are these protective orders really safe and worth the time and effort? Three people who did have the courage to get one still died while the protective order was current. Wow! So, if my boyfriend who does not live with me decides to meet the crap out me, I can not get a protective order against him because we do not live together or have a child in common. Is there really a point? If it's just 72 hours or until our next court date. He may try to beat the crap out of me again before court. Do not let me discourage you from getting a protective order because I feel that it is the first step of ending the tragic process of domestic violence, but come on we need to revise laws. Especially if it is evident that my face is swollen. Come on, why do I need a protective order again? Hello? Just lock him up!
